i dont believe in the short comment rule. I for one do happen to say "cool" or "wow". Its hard for me to put into words what i think about a certain piece of work and im sure im not the only one. One should be thankful for every comment they recieve...regardless of it just being "wow" or "cool". I get those comments all the time..and dont care that they are short. I appreciate them just like i would a very long comment. I also just like to be a silent fav'er. People should appreciate that as well. =)

Yeah, some works defy definition.
:icontuborg:
well my comments are often short
I have most of the time about 200 deviations waiting for comments in my inbox and if I were to write a detailed comment on everyone of the I woudnīt be able to do anything else.
I really love to get long and detailed comments on my work but I seldome give that kind of comments myself.
I think most of all itīs the thougt behind the deviation that triggers the willingness to make a long comment.
Some artist upload one picture in a week time and you can really tell that they have been spending hours and hours working on it to make it perfect...........then I feel I must give them a really good comment.

WoW

just kidding  I think it's harder each time to comment a deviation and it takes also a lot of time. so with short comments you can comment more deviations in less time. I don't know much to say when I like a deviation very much then "great job" or "beautiful capture"
I mean I have about 90 messages a day so if I comment like I'm doing right now, it takes me about 4 hours to finish. btw this took me 10 minutes :)
I type very slow hehehe oke 11 minutes :D

hehehe - thnx for taking 11 minutes to comment on this..
I do agree with you - that it might get out of hand with hundreds of deviations to wrestle through,... but at least if we like somethink a lot - we should be able to put more words to it...
:)

I actually just recently left another online art community due to the abuse of comments...we didn't really have a problem with the short wows compared to the overty critical comments from those who appeared to think they were experts in art...althought their own artwork suggested other wise.

I think sometimes it is difficult for artists to discuss art...while they can visually express themselves visually...they somehow do not know how to effective express themselves verbally.

When it comes to commenting on another artist's work...I think it is important to point out exactly what "wows" you, and if you're feeling up to it, it is good to share a little constructive feedback ever now and then. But for the most part, I try to stay focused on the positives for a couple of reasons.

For one, many artists are overtly critical of their own works. To the point, that they sometimes stop creating art simply because they think that they are not good enough. However, as we all know...every artist has a bad day. Not everything we create is a masterpiece. But if you keep creating art, you do have those "wow" moments.

Another reason to be considerate in your comments is the understanding that many artists turn to art as a therapeutic way to help them deal with the world around them. I know for me, it has been a very healing experience to be able to express myself visually. It allows me to let it all out...

Sometimes the artwork we create can be dark, it can be angry, it can be depressing....those emotions are just part of life...

Turning to your art to find a place to express those emotions is a healthy way to deal with stress. It can also help turn things around...once you let go, let it all out...you sometimes find that you can take a deep breath of relief...knowing that it is going to be ok, that maybe there is hope.

I'm sure you were not quite expecting such a lengthly comment...but this is one of the things that I love about interacting with other artists...by sharing and communicating...we often trigger thoughts and ideas that are beyond what the original artist intended...so thanks for sharing your thoughts...I think I might post this comment in my journals since it touched on some thoughts that have been in the back of my mind...

I love the tone of voice this has. To me it's slightly sarcastic, but highly informative.

Love it.
